Class 304 (AM4) 035 at Stafford.2 viewsAlmost a total 1960's scene at Stafford on the evening of September 19th 1978, as Class 304, Set 035 still in 4-Car formation with its first class saloon calls en-route to Rugby. The station at Stafford was a product of the massive investment and upgrade of the Premier Line in the mid 1960's when the electrification was completed from Liverpool & Crewe to London Euston. The 304s shared the semi-fast services along with the AM10 units. The 304s were built in two batches at Wolverton with 45 sets being built.55555

The Deltic Scotsman Farewell -York - 2/1/82.3 viewsHistory in the making at York on the 2nd January 1982. In poor weather conditions, 55015 -'Tulyar' brings the final BR Deltic hauled Northbound passenger train, 'The Deltic Scotsman Farewell' into York on the 2nd January 1982. The train was an out and back from Kings Cross to Edinburgh, ensuring that after 20 years as Kings of the ECML, these locomotives bowed out in style. It was only fitting for me to come here, as it was at York many years previously that a saw my first Deltic. 55555

37130 at Bamber Bridge.1 viewsIn time-honoured fashion, Class 37 37130 digs in as it approaches Bamber Bridge with the Summer only Blackpool North to Sheffield working on May 29th 1982. This service had run out and back for many years and brought the welcome sight of an Eastern Region 37 or if you were lucky a 31, to the Lancashire Coast. 1982 was the last year of loco-haulage, in 1983 the service went over to DMU operation. The service did not operate in 1984, bringing to an end another chapter in BR Summer holiday traffic.55555

Trans-Pennine DMC E51965 at Liverpool Lime Street.1 viewsA 5-Car Trans-Pennine DMU set had just arrived at Liverpool Lime Street with a service from Hull on May 22nd 1979. Complete with its oil tail-lamp, E51965 was a Driving Motor Composite. These stylish DMUs, built at Swindon Works in 1960 had a mixture of saloon and compartment seating. They were stalwarts on the Liverpool-Hull route for most of their lives, until the last few were withdrawn in 1984. Due to asbestos contamination none survived into preservation.55555
