Class 37, 37222 at Deepdale Mill Street.12 viewsClass 37, 37222 propells its loaded train of HEA coal hoppers into position in the coal yard at Deepdale on the 25th July 1991. The empties are to the right of the locomotive, ready to be worked back to Washwood Heath. The level crossing gates at Deepdale Mill Street match the general air of decay.
This section of railway was the original isolated Preston & Longridge line of 1840.

08744 at Preston.11 viewsClass 08, 08744 removes a defective Mark 1, Buffet/Restaurant Car, 1953, from a Glasgow Central to London Euston service, at Preston, on the 6th February 1988.

Class 25, 25142 - Last Train Courtaulds, Ribbleton.11 viewsThe last train of empty 16Ton mineral wagons is slowly brought out of the exchange sidings, at the doomed Courtaulds Factory at Ribbleton, and onto the former Longridge Branch, on February 12th 1980, with Class 25, 25142 in charge. This view is looking in the direction of Grimsargh & Longridge, with the truncated branch trailing away behind the locomotive. This area has been completely transformed with the building of an industrial estate, and a link road to the M6 Motorway.

Leyland Motors Sidings Farington.11 viewsRunning parallel to the WCML at Farington, just south of Leyland are the sidings of the former Leyland Motors Farington Factory. On the 1st May 1982, along with the resident Fowler diesel shunter, was BR mark 1 coach M21234. The coach was awaiting movement to the British Leyland factory at Workington, for rebodying with a modified Leyland National bus type body. The coach became RDB977091, and was a possible replacement for ageing loco hauled stock. It was not a success, and the project was not followed up.

Class 45 45107 at Farington.11 viewsClass 45, 45107 gets underway from Leyland with a Liverpool Lime Street to Preston Service on the 3rd September 1986. The train is travelling on the Down Slow Line, just to right of the first coach was the site of the siding that once led to the adjacent Leyland Motors Foundry complex.

47018 at Farington Junction.11 viewsIn Railfreight Livery, Class 47 47018 passes Croston Road, just North of Farington Junction, as it travels on the Down Slow Line with a Liverpool Lime Street to Preston Service on the 27th July 1988. In the background can be seen the 'back line' leading to Lostock Hall Junction, and also the site of the former Lostock Hall Carriage Sidings which have now been covered with a housing estate.

66152 at Portway Exchange Sidings.10 viewsIn DB Schenker red livery, class 66, 66152 arrives in the exchange sidings at the end of its trans-pennine haul on the 22nd September 2010. It is passing the empty rake of tank wagons which it will haul, as 6E32, the returning working back to Lindsey Oil Refinery.

'Energy' at Preston Docks.10 viewsThe peace of the derelict former Preston Docks site is disturbed by one of the Preston Corporation owned Sentinel Diesel Shunters. There was a trio of identical locomotives, purchased new for the dock railway in 1968. 'Energy' is seen here en-route, on rails now lifted, to the Tar Distillers Plant, situated at the west end of the dock estate. Today, the loco would coming out of the McDonalds restaurant drive through! Pedders Lane is in the background. July 1984.

Class 47, 47615 on Farington Curve.10 viewsOn a throwback to the old 'Wakes Week' Holiday Trains of the past, Class 47, 47615-'Caerphilly Castle' drops down Farington Curve with the Saturday Only, Rose Grove to Paignton Service on the 11th August 1988. The 47 will work the train to Preston, where an AC electric locomotive will take over for the leg to Birmingham New Street.

37024 at Strand Road Level Crossing.10 viewsThe Health and Safety people would have a seizure today at the sight of a loaded train of tank wagons crossing a main road, feet away from vehicles, with the only protection being a man with a red flag! Immingham Depots Class 37, 37024 makes its way across Strand Road on the 3rd June 1982 with loaded Petroleum & Tar tankers bound for the former Preston Dock Estate. That leading tank wagon is one of the fleet taken out of service in late 2010. The Ford Cortina Estate will now be long departed.

37244 Deepdale Mill Street Level Crossing.9 viewsClass 37, 37244 pushes its train of loaded HEA Coal Hoppers across the level crossing at Deepdale Mill Street on the 3rd May 1990. The train is on the original 1840 Preston to Longridge Line, which had its separate isolated terminus at Deepdale, behind Stephenson Terrace.
