142051 departs from Southport.2 viewsMerseytravel liveried Class 142 142051 runs alongside Pine Grove on the South-East side of Southport, whilst working the First North Western, 16.16 Southport to Rochdale on May 5th 2003. This stretch of railway was once served by electric trains from Southport to Meols Cop and onwards to Crossens via the West Lancashire Line. Short-sighted economic zeoltry in 1964 saw the line from Meols Cop to Preston close, and along with it the electrics that now would be part of the Merseyrail Electric System.
HST Power Car 43063 at Wigan North Western.1 viewsHST Power Car 43063-'Maiden Voyager' leads the Virgin Cross-Country, 13.00 Edinburgh to Penzance 'Cornish Scot' Service, calling at Wigan North Western on the 17th May 1998. 43063 not only carried a non-standard yellow front end that extended on to the cab roof, but was also adorned with the short lived Virgin Cross-Country XC bodyside logos. The power car is now part of the First Great Western fleet.

Class 442 Wessex 2421 at Southampton.1 viewsWessex Class 442, 2421 glides away from Southampton Central with a London Waterloo to Weymouth service on October 30th 2004. Introduced in 1988/89, the stylish units were powered by the electrical equipment salvaged from the 4-Reps that worked on the Bournemouth line from 1967. The 442s were all withdrawn from service with South West Trains in February 2007, being replaced with Siemens built Class 444s.

The coach had been a Eastern Region Class 307 Emu Driving Trailer numbered 75012, and was converted to a PCV with roller-shutter doors for use in mail trains by Hunslet Barclay at Kilmarnock in 1996. With EWS losing the contract to carry mail in 2004, 94340 and most of the 42 strong PCV fleet were subsequently scrapped.

Reminders of the past are all around at this much changed location. There are a distinct lack of apartment buildings in this view, today apartment blocks dominate the skyline here.
60082 was taken out of service in 2008 still carrying grey livery, and is still in store at Crewe.

The loco had the road, and was heading for Springs Branch Depot. 56033 was withdrawn from service in 2003 and scrapped at EMR, Kingsbury in 2010.

Fragonset was formed in 1997 and became FM Rail in 2004, the company went out of business in 2006. Cotswold Rail was formed in 2000, but ceased trading in 2009.
