142051 departs from Southport.2 viewsMerseytravel liveried Class 142 142051 runs alongside Pine Grove on the South-East side of Southport, whilst working the First North Western, 16.16 Southport to Rochdale on May 5th 2003. This stretch of railway was once served by electric trains from Southport to Meols Cop and onwards to Crossens via the West Lancashire Line. Short-sighted economic zeoltry in 1964 saw the line from Meols Cop to Preston close, and along with it the electrics that now would be part of the Merseyrail Electric System.

HST Power Car 43063 at Wigan North Western.1 viewsHST Power Car 43063-'Maiden Voyager' leads the Virgin Cross-Country, 13.00 Edinburgh to Penzance 'Cornish Scot' Service, calling at Wigan North Western on the 17th May 1998. 43063 not only carried a non-standard yellow front end that extended on to the cab roof, but was also adorned with the short lived Virgin Cross-Country XC bodyside logos. The power car is now part of the First Great Western fleet.

National Power 59205 at Burton Salmon.1 viewsWith locomotive and hoppers in matching National Power livery, Class 59 59205 -'Vale of Evesham' passes Burton Salmon with an empty coal working on the 28th August 1996.

Coradia Class 175, 175115 at Blackpool North.1 views175115 shares a platform with 175108 at Blackpool North on May 29th 2004. The North Western branding had been blanked out on the First Group 'Barbie' livery, as by this date the units were also being used by Wales & Borders, drawn from a common pool at Chester Depot, home to the Coradia Fleet.

Fragonset Class 31, 31459 at Kirkham North Junction.1 viewsAn on-the-way-to-work shot! Fragonset Class 31, 31459 -'Cerberus' passes Kirkham North Junction with the First North Western, 07.19 Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on June 14th 2004. At the rear of the four Mark 2 Coaches is 31602.

Class 442 Wessex 2421 at Southampton.1 viewsWessex Class 442, 2421 glides away from Southampton Central with a London Waterloo to Weymouth service on October 30th 2004. Introduced in 1988/89, the stylish units were powered by the electrical equipment salvaged from the 4-Reps that worked on the Bournemouth line from 1967. The 442s were all withdrawn from service with South West Trains in February 2007, being replaced with Siemens built Class 444s.

Res Propelling Control Vehicle (PCV) 94340 at Crewe.1 viewsRail Express Systems Propelling Control Vehicle (PCV), 94340 stabled in what was formerly Crewe Diesel Depot on July 31st 2004. The coach had been a Eastern Region Class 307 Emu Driving Trailer numbered 75012, and was converted to a PCV with roller-shutter doors for use in mail trains by Hunslet Barclay at Kilmarnock in 1996. With EWS losing the contract to carry mail in 2004, 94340 and most of the 42 strong PCV fleet were subsequently scrapped.

60082 approaching Manchester Victoria.1 viewsStill carrying Railfreight grey livery with Transrail branding, EWS Class 60, 60082 drifts downhill as it approaches Manchester Victoria with a Salford Hope Street to Peak Forest empty stone working on September 24th 2004. Reminders of the past are all around at this much changed location. There are a distinct lack of apartment buildings in this view, today apartment blocks dominate the skyline here.
60082 was taken out of service in 2008 still carrying grey livery, and is still in store at Crewe.

GNER Class 08, 08892 at Doncaster Works.1 viewsIn GNER livery, Wabtec Class 08 08892 was stabled in the yard at Doncaster Works on July 27th 2003. The loco was originally built at Horwich Works, entering service on the Western Region at Swindon numbered D4122 in March 1962.

Transrail 56033 at Wigan North Western.1 viewsFollowing use on Sunday engineering work, Transrail branded Class 56, 56033 -'Shotton Paper Mill' was in the bay at Wigan North Western on Sunday June 1st 1997. The loco had the road, and was heading for Springs Branch Depot. 56033 was withdrawn from service in 2003 and scrapped at EMR, Kingsbury in 2010.

NSE Class 101 L840 arrives at Blackpool North.1 viewsIn Network South East livery, Class 101 Set Number L840, formed of cars 53311 & 53322 arrives at Blackpool North with a well-loaded 09.45 First North Western service from Manchester Piccadilly on May 31st 1997.

Fragonset 47715 at Doncaster Works.1 viewsClassic traction on display at Doncaster Works open day on July 27th 2003. Fragonset Class 47, 47715 keeps company with 31106 and in the background is Cotswold Rail liveried Class 47, 47316. Fragonset was formed in 1997 and became FM Rail in 2004, the company went out of business in 2006. Cotswold Rail was formed in 2000, but ceased trading in 2009.
