Class 108, M50968 at Preston.5 viewsComplete with its oil tail lamp, Derby built Class 108, Driving Motor Brake Second, M50968 stands in Bay Platform 3A at Preston on May 15th 1978. The unit was working Preston to Ormskirk services.
3H Class 205, 1124 enters Southampton Central.4 views3H 'Hampshire' Class 205 DEMU enters Southampton Central on a dull July 28th 1978 with a service for Portsmouth & Southsea. The unit is passing the utilitarian brick signalbox constructed by the Southern Railway in 1935.
DMU Excursion at Blaenau Ffestiniog.3 viewsAnother view of a Ramblers Excursion from East Lancashire to North Wales, stood in the former LNWR Goods Yard, amidst the slate at Blaenau Ffestiniog in May 1978. The 10-Car formation consisted of a Class 104 3-car set, a Class 108 2-car, a Class 105 2-car and at the rear another 3-car Class 104. The train had first travelled to Llandudno before traversing the Conway Valley Line. The nearest car is Class 104 DMBS M50468. The former LNWR station was still in use at this time, just visible on the left.
47500 at Conway.6 viewsWith Conway Castle as a backdrop, 47500-'Great Western', toils away from the Llandudno Junction stop with a London Euston to Holyhead service in July 1979. The train is about to enter the now unique tubular bridge, designed by Robert Stephenson.

Class 08 Snowplough conversion at Wath.7 viewsFormerly Class 08, 08119, this locomotive was withdrawn from service in February 1977 and converted into a non-powered Snowplough, renumbered ADB968011 and seen stabled at Wath Depot in September 1978. Several Class 08s were similarly converted, they were not a success, and all were withdrawn in 1979. ADB968011 was scrapped in 1980.
Class 56, 56071 at Wigan Springs Branch.7 views56071 was stabled outside the maintenance depot at Wigan Springs Branch on the 2nd November 1985. 08815 was inside the depot.
Built at Doncaster Works, 56071 was withdrawn from service in 2006 and scrapped in October 2011.
31124 at Reading.8 views31124 digs in at Reading as its heads a lengthy train of empty newspaper vans bound for Old Oak Common in June 1979.
47258 departs from Leominster.3 viewsClass 47, 47258 accelerates away from Leominster with a 4-Coach Cardiff to Crewe service on July 30th 1978. 47258 was built by Brush in 1966, works number 700, numbered D1938. It was a Western Region allocated locomotive for much of its 38 year working life.

Gloucester Class 100, M56111 at Longsight TMD.4 viewsGloucester Class 100 Driving Trailer Composite M56111 was stabled with various other items of rolling stock, including two more Class 100 vehicles, at Longsight TMD on June 18th 1978. After BR use, M56111 became an instruction coach on the Ministry of Defence railway system at Moreton-On-Lugg. It was eventually scrapped in 1985. Alongside is the Longsight Overhead Line Maintenance Train, with two former LMS vintage coaches visible.
Class 104 DMU at Southport.9 viewsA joint open day was held at Southport on the 28th September 1985, between British Rail and the Steamport Museum, situated in the former Southport MPD. A shuttle service was oprated between the station and the museum by a Class 104, 2-Car DMU. On tracks now lifted, 53469 & 54175 run along the link from the station towards the former St Lukes station, before reversing into the Museum yard.
Deltics 55017 & 55016 stabled at York.7 viewsAlmost at the end of their BR careers, Class 55 Deltics, 55017 -'The Durham Light Infantry' and 55016 -'Gordon Highlander' stand in the Depot yard at York on the 22nd November 1981. At this late stage in their lives the remaining Deltics were working the York to Kings Cross Semi-Fast Services or working overnight ECML trains. Both these Locomotives survived until the very end of scheduled Deltic running on New Years Eve 1981. 55016 was eventually preserved, 55017 was scrapped at Doncaster in 1983.
50019 -'Ramillies' at Gloucester.3 viewsIn unrefurbished condition, Class 50 50019 -'Ramillies', stands at Gloucester with a Bristol to Birmingham New Street service on September 19th 1978. The mail is being loaded into the brake coach, complete with platform tractor, a sight now confined to the past.
