08524 at Eccles (Liverpool & Manchester 150)2 views08524 stands at Eccles with three replica Liverpool & Manchester Railway Coaches on September 14th 1980. The 08 had brought the stock from Liverpool Road Museum at Manchester, ready for the arrival of VIPs from Liverpool Lime Street, who once at Eccles would transfer to the 'old train' for the last stage of the journey to Manchester hauled by the vintage L&M locomotive 'Lion'. This was to commemorate the opening of the route between the two cities on September 15th 1830.

08954 at Plymouth.2 viewsWith the roof tops of Plymouth as a backdrop, 08954 was shunting parcel and mail vans at Plymouth station on July 26th 1980. This was a time-honoured scene at all major stations - now sadly consigned to history. The 08 was new from Darington Works in October 1962 numbered D4184, its first home was at Ebbw Junction (86A) and it was tranferred to Laira (84A) in May 1971.

Class 50, 50039 at Starcross.7 viewsWith the Exe Estuary as a backdrop, Large-Logo livered Class 50, 50039 -'Implacable' draws to stand at Starcross with a Newcastle to Paignton Inter-Regional Service on the 29th May 1986. This long distance working called at all stations between Exeter and Newton Abbot.

Withdrawn 40158, 25141 & 25188 at Wigan Springs Branch Depot.2 viewsWithdrawn locomotives queue up at the northern side of Wigan Springs Branch Depot on April 1st 1984. 40158 was withdrawn due to worn wheelsets in December 1983 and was scrapped at Doncaster Works in September 1984. 25141 was withdrawn in September 1982 and scrapped at Swindon Works in January 1987. 25188 was made redundant in August 1982 and was also consigned to history at Swindon Works in March 1987.

Class 25, 25078 at Wigan Springs Branch.4 viewsSunday engineering work over, 25078 brings an overhead line maintenance train back to Wigan Springs Branch on October 14th 1984. In the background fellow class 25s, 25141 & 25188 stand in the depot sidings, withdrawn and awaiting a one-way journey to the scrapyard.

Class 116 DMU at Kentish Town.1 viewsMinus its centre trailer, a reformed 2-Car Class 116 Derby Suburban DMU, formed of cars M50054 & M50075 stand at a very dilapidated looking Kentish Town after arrival from Barking on September 20th 1980. The Assembly House public house dominates the skyline here.

HST Power Car 43029 at Dawlish Warren.6 viewsThe changing face of the HST fleet. In InterCity 125 Executive livery, power car 43029 passes Dawlish Warren with a Paddington to Penzance service on the 29th May 1986. The Mark 3 Trailers are still in the original blue & grey livery.

97405 - 40060 at Wigan Springs Branch Depot.7 viewsClass 40, 97405 - ex 40060, was one of quartet of 40s given new identities for use with the Crewe Station remodelling project in 1985. The locos were then used on engineering duties around the north-west until withdrawl from service in 1987. On the 9th September 1986, the former Scottish Region machine was stabled at Wigan Springs Branch Depot. Whilst 97406/7/8 were eventually preserved, 40060 was not so fortunate and was subsequently broken up for scrap.

Class 104, M50453 at Blaenau Ffestiniog.3 viewsClass 104, M50453 stands at Blaenau Ffestiniog after arrival with an excursion from East Lancashire on May 25th 1978. The 9-Car formation has been moved out of the platform road to enable the service train from Llandudno Junction to use the station.
It was to be another 4 years before the narrow gauge Ffestiniog Railway made a triumphal return to the town and sharing a new joint station with BR, enabling the former LNWR Station seen here to be closed.

40044 at Reddish Depot.3 viewsFollowing a runaway and derailment at Chinley with a loaded stone train in September 1978, 40044 was moved to Reddish Electric Depot for assessment. This was the less damaged end of the loco. Despite the rundown of the Class 40 fleet, repairs were authorised, the work being done at Crewe. 40044 was eventually withdrawn from service in January 1985.

Class 123 DMU E52100 at Longsight Depot.3 viewsA former Western Region Swindon built 'Inter-City' DMU was sharing the sidings at Longsight Depot on August 31st 1980 with a magnificent selection of BR first-generation DMU sets. Alongside E52100 are Class 104s, 108s and on the extreme left is a Gloucester RC&W Class 100. There were 10 of these 4-Car Class 123s built at Swindon Works in 1963 and they were the last of the BR first-generation DMUs. None of these stylish units have survived.

37084 at Liverpool Street.3 viewsIts just before lunchtime at Liverpool Street on April 30th 1980, as Class 37 37084 prepares to depart with a service to Cambridge. Lurking in the background is a Class 305 EMU, number 433. An example of the once numerous Brute Trolley stands forlornly on the damp platform.
