Class 47, 47277 at Deepdale.7 viewsEmbellished with a silver roof, 47277 plods slowly along the former Longridge Branch at Deepdale with a train of loaded HEA wagons from Toton Yard on the 22nd June 1987. The train has just passed through the site of Deepdale Station, closed in 1930. In the background is the former Preston Royal Infirmary which closed its doors for the last time in 1981.

Cravens Class 105, M50771 at Bamber Bridge.4 viewsAlmost funicular style, as one Cravens Class 105 arrives at Bamber Bridge with the 13.46 Colne to Preston, another has departed on the 14.30 Preston to Colne working. In this scene from August 23rd 1980, DMBS M50771 passes over the A6 trunk road about to make its last stop on the way to Preston. The L&Y subway is still in existance, note the youngster on a 1970s Chopper pushbike waiting on the pavement!
The Newton Heath based Cravens Power-Twin sets, dominated the services along the East Lancashire Line.

Class 31, 31124 at Salwick Station.6 viewsClass 31, 31124 draws to a halt at Salwick with the 16.50 Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North Service on the 24th September 1988. The return of certain locomotive hauled services was due to problems with Class 142 Pacers, causing a shortage of units.

47280 at Lostock Hall Depot.8 viewsIn Railfreight Livery, Class 47, 47280-'Pedigree', shunts rolling stock in the former Lostock Hall MPD, on the 7th November 1986. The depot had been the last operational steam shed on BR in August 1968, and when the diesels moved out in the early 1970s, it became a wagon repair depot.

25142 departs from Courtaulds Ribbleton - Last Train.5 viewsThe end of an era - On a bleak February 12th 1980, the driver of class 25, 25142 looks back to see all is well as the last train of empty 16Ton Mineral Wagons departs from the Courtaulds Factory at Ribbleton. The train is running on the then surviving eastern extremity of the former Longridge Branch as it heads back towards Preston. Not the best of images given the weather on a dull February day with Kodachrome 64, but try repeating this shot now!

2-Car Class 101 DMU, M53323 at Leyland.2 viewsA 2-Car Class 101 with DMBS M53323 leading, calls at Leyland as part of a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on March 25th 1987. Unusually the 101 has gained a black cab window embellishment.

Class 104 DMU at Salwick.6 viewsA Class 104 2-Car DMU passes Salwick with a Blackpool South to Colne Service on the 15th October 1988. Salwick Station still retained its Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway canopy. This scene was recorded from the cobbled road that led to the former goods yard.

31276 on Farington Moss - Ormskirk Line.7 viewsA day out with Class 31, 31276-'Calder Hall Power Station' on the 3rd September 1989. The loco was working a scrap recovery train from Farington Curve Junction to Midge Hall. The train is seen here on Farington Moss with the remains of the former up line to Ormskirk having components recovered. The up line was taken out of use in 1983.

37901-'Mirrlees Pioneer' at Leyland.5 viewsIn Railfreight Metals Livery, 37901-'Mirrlees Pioneer' slogs past Leyland on the Up Slow with a heavy train of CDA Hoppers with Limestone from Hardendale Quarry at Shap, bound for the blast furnaces of the South Wales steel industry on the 31st August 1993. The small 37/9 sub-class of initially four locomotives, was created as a test bed for a possible new Class 38, using the Mirrlees MB275T diesel engine.
