Dean Crossing at Whitwell.1 viewsThis is the site of the former Dean Level Crossing near Whitwell, on the Ventnor West Branch on July 16th 2012. It is almost 60 years since a passenger train passed this way, the branch from Merstone closing on September 15th 1952. The line crossed the B3327 Whitwell to Ventnor road, the course of the line is where the two red cars are parked. In the shadows beyond, is St Lawrence Tunnel beyond which the line followed the Undercliff on its way to Ventnor.

The loco was unveiled in this special livery at Railfest, held at the NRM York in June 2012. 91110 holds the British speed record for a locomotive at 162 mph, attained in 1989 at Little Bytham.

Out of sight at the other end of the train was fellow EPS class 37, 37603. This was one of the last diesel hauled trains to traverse this line. The itinerary on that day included a trip along the Dungeness Branch. It was a long day - an 06.15 start from Crewe on Saturday morning and only getting back to Crewe at 01.24 on Sunday morning!Dec 10, 2015
