The train had started from Milton Keynes Central and was making for Carlisle via the Cumbrian Coast, returning via the S&C and Blackburn regaining the WCML at Farington Junction.

A product of Swindon Works in February 1965, the loco lasted in BR service until December 1967, a mere 2 years and 10 months! Fortunately the locomotive lived-on working for the National Coal Board who realised they were onto a good thing in obtaining a fleet of nearly new locomotives. Its NCB career finished when the colliery system closed at Ashington in the 1980s.

The 08 had brought the stock from Liverpool Road Museum at Manchester, ready for the arrival of VIPs from Liverpool Lime Street, who once at Eccles would transfer to the 'old train' for the last stage of the journey to Manchester hauled by the vintage L&M locomotive 'Lion'. This was to commemorate the opening of the route between the two cities on September 15th 1830.

Out of sight at the other end of the train was fellow EPS class 37, 37603. This was one of the last diesel hauled trains to traverse this line. The itinerary on that day included a trip along the Dungeness Branch. It was a long day - an 06.15 start from Crewe on Saturday morning and only getting back to Crewe at 01.24 on Sunday morning!Dec 10, 2015
